Key areas of responsibility
HR processes and protocols
• Ensuring that accurate HR systems and protocols are kept e.g. for attendance, personnel files, contracts, exit surveys.
• Oversee the application of IST’s policies and regulations of salary, benefits and entitlements.
• Oversee the housing allocation process for overseas-hire employees.
Policy and legal framework
• Ensure IST’s compliance with HR-related laws and school policies.
• Ensuring collation of work permit application documents and timely submission of work to the relevant Government departments.
• Contribute to the review and development of IST policy with respect to HR.
• Keep the IST management team informed about best practice in HR with respect to equality, diversity, data protection, health & safety, staff welfare and other similar areas
Staff development
• Ensure that an effective system of performance appraisal is implemented throughout the school.
• Oversee and coordinate the orientation to IST of new employees.
• Provide support and guidance for other supervisors as they manage the performance of others in their functional areas.
Recruitment
• Develop and implement an efficient process for the management of employment applications.
• Advise IST management on best practice regarding selection processes.
• Develop and champion strategies for encouraging the employment of Tanzanian nationals at all levels within IST.
• Ensure that IST’s recruitment practices follow best practice with regard to child protection.
Communication and reporting
• Informing staff in a timely and effective way about relevant HR-related issues.
• Reporting on HR issues and activities to the Director and, where directed, to the Board.
Team leadership
• Leading and managing the HR department.
• Setting departmental objectives and monitoring progress towards them.
• Contributing to the development and appraisal of department members.
Planning
• Assist the Director in the development of an annual staffing plan for short, medium and long-term employment at the school.
Qualification, knowledge, skills and experience:
• Minimum of 5 years Human Resources experience.
• Intercultural understanding and experience of successfully working with employees from diverse nationalities will be an advantage.
• Strong affinity with IST’s core values and mission (see http://www.istafrica.com/GuidingStatements).
• A relevant degree (Human Resource Management) and/or any other Human Resources certification, Master’s or Bachelor’s degree will be preferred.
• Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory.
• Good understanding of Tanzanian Labor Law and regulatory requirements.
• Ability to priorities important objectives and tasks.
• Enthusiastic team player with a strong drive to create a positive work environment.
• Approachable and people oriented.
